Dear Parents and Students of the IB Programme at Kongsberg Upper Secondary School

It is with regret that I must inform you of a recent decision made by the Buskerud County Council to discontinue the IB programme by the 2026–2027 academic year. This decision was finalized at the County Council meeting on December 16.

This means that while there will still be a Year 3 IB class during the 2025–2026 school year, no new Year 2 IB class will be initiated for that year.

It is deeply disheartening and unfortunate that the County Council does not have the financial capacity to sustain such an important programme as the IB.

Sadly, I believe part of the reasoning behind this decision lies in the declining application numbers for the IB programme in recent years. This trend was exacerbated last year when the class size was reduced from 30 to 15 students.

The staff of the IB programme possess invaluable expertise that greatly enriches our school. We are committed to doing everything in our power to retain both their competence and their positions as we navigate the challenges ahead.

Best regards,
Thomas Landaas Eriksen
Principal
